UPSC Indian Audit and Accounts Service (IAAS) Syllabus

The Indian Audit and Accounts Service (IAAS) is one of the Group A Central Services under the UPSC Civil Services Examination. The selection process includes three stages: Preliminary Examination, Main Examination, and Interview. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the syllabus for each stage:

1. Preliminary Examination:

The Preliminary Examination is composed of two papers:

Paper I: General Studies

  • Current events of national and international importance
  • History of India and Indian National Movement
  • Indian and World Geography
  • Indian Polity and Governance
  • Economic and Social Development
  • Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity, and Climate Change
  • General Science

Paper II: CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test)

  • Comprehension
  • Interpersonal Skills including Communication Skills
  • Logical Reasoning and Analytical Ability
  • Decision-making and Problem-solving
  • General Mental Ability
  • Basic Numeracy
  • Data Interpretation

2. Main Examination:

The Main Examination consists of nine papers, of which two are qualifying and seven are considered for ranking.

Qualifying Papers:

  • Paper A: Indian Language (one of the languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution)
  • Paper B: English

Paper I: Essay

Paper II: General Studies I

  • Indian Heritage and Culture
  • History of India and Indian National Movement
  • World History

Paper III: General Studies II

  • Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice, and International Relations

Paper IV: General Studies III

  • Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security, and Disaster Management

Paper V: General Studies IV

  • Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude

Paper VI: Optional Subject Paper 1

Paper VII: Optional Subject Paper 2

Optional Subjects:

Candidates choose one optional subject for Papers VI and VII. Some common optional subjects include:

  • Commerce & Accountancy
  • Public Administration
  • Economics
  • Political Science & International Relations
  • Sociology

3. Interview/Personality Test:

  • The Interview/Personality Test assesses the candidate’s personality, communication skills, and suitability for the service.

Additional Preparation Tips for IAAS:

  • Focus on accounting and auditing principles: Since IAAS deals with accounting and audit, having a strong grasp of financial management, accounting standards, and auditing principles will be beneficial.
  • Study economic and financial policies: Understand the economic and financial policies of India.
  • Regular updates on current affairs: Being up-to-date with current affairs, especially those related to the economy and governance, is crucial.
