IBPS RRB (Regional Rural Bank) Syllabus

The IBPS RRB (Regional Rural Bank) Officer exam is conducted by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) to recruit officers in Regional Rural Banks across India. The exam is conducted for three different scales:
- Officer Scale I (Assistant Manager)
- Officer Scale II (Manager)
- Officer Scale III (Senior Manager)
Each scale has a slightly different syllabus, and the selection process includes Preliminary Examination, Main Examination, and an Interview (for Officer Scale I) or a Single Online Exam and Interview (for Officer Scale II & III).
1. IBPS RRB Officer Scale I (Assistant Manager)
a) Preliminary Examination
The Preliminary Exam for Officer Scale I consists of two sections:
Reasoning Ability
- Puzzles: Seating arrangement, floor puzzles, etc.
- Syllogism: Logical reasoning based on statements and conclusions.
- Inequalities: Problems involving mathematical inequalities.
- Blood Relations: Family relationship problems.
- Order & Ranking: Problems on ordering and ranking of individuals or items.
- Direction Sense: Problems requiring knowledge of directions.
- Coding-Decoding: Deciphering codes from given patterns.
- Alphanumeric Series: Series of alphabets and numbers with patterns.
- Logical Reasoning: Assumptions, conclusions, and cause-effect reasoning.
Quantitative Aptitude
- Simplification: Basic arithmetic calculations and simplifications.
- Number Series: Finding the missing or wrong number in a series.
- Data Interpretation: Interpreting data from tables, graphs, and charts.
- Quadratic Equations: Solving quadratic equations.
- Data Sufficiency: Deciding whether provided data is sufficient to answer a question.
- Percentage, Ratio & Proportion: Basic problems involving percentages and ratios.
- Profit and Loss: Problems based on profit, loss, and discounts.
- Simple & Compound Interest: Interest calculations for different time periods.
- Work & Time: Problems on efficiency and time management.
- Time & Distance: Problems involving speed, distance, and time.
- Mixture & Alligation: Problems involving mixtures and their concentrations.
b) Main Examination
The Main Exam consists of five sections:
1. Reasoning Ability (Same as Preliminary but with more complex questions)
2. Quantitative Aptitude (Same as Preliminary but with more complex questions)
3. General Awareness
- Current Affairs: National and international news.
- Banking Awareness: Banking terms, concepts, and updates.
- Financial Awareness: News related to the financial sector.
- Static GK: Important dates, events, and persons.
- Indian Economy: Basic economic concepts and updates.
- Government Schemes: Knowledge of various government schemes.
- Agriculture: Basic knowledge related to agriculture and rural development.
English Language/Hindi Language (Candidates can choose between the two)
- Reading Comprehension: Passages with questions based on content.
- Cloze Test: A passage with missing words that must be filled in.
- Spotting Errors: Identifying grammatical errors in sentences.
- Sentence Improvement: Correcting sentences with grammatical mistakes.
- Fill in the Blanks: Completing sentences with appropriate words.
- Para Jumbles: Rearranging jumbled sentences to form a coherent passage.
- Vocabulary: Synonyms, antonyms, idioms, and phrases.
Computer Knowledge
- Basics of Computers: Hardware, software, and operating systems.
- MS Office: MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint.
- Internet & Networking: Basics of the internet and networking.
- Computer Security: Basics of cybersecurity, antivirus, and firewalls.
- Database Management: Basics of databases and data storage.
- Computer Abbreviations: Common abbreviations and terminology.
2. IBPS RRB Officer Scale II (Manager)
The Officer Scale II exam is conducted for two different categories: General Banking Officer and Specialist Officer.
a) Officer Scale II (General Banking Officer)
This is a single online exam consisting of six sections:
- Reasoning Ability (Same as Officer Scale I)
- Quantitative Aptitude (Same as Officer Scale I)
- General Awareness (Same as Officer Scale I)
- English Language / Hindi Language (Same as Officer Scale I)
- Computer Knowledge (Same as Officer Scale I)
- Financial Awareness

- Banking Awareness: In-depth knowledge of banking operations and regulations.
- Financial Markets: Understanding of financial markets, stock exchanges, and instruments.
- Budget & Monetary Policy: Knowledge of the Indian budget and monetary policies.
- International Banking: Basics of international banking, trade finance, and forex.
b) Officer Scale II (Specialist Officer)
Specialist Officer positions include IT Officer, Marketing Officer, Treasury Manager, Law Officer, Agriculture Officer, and Chartered Accountant. The syllabus for each post includes:
Professional Knowledge
a) IT Officer: Database management, networking, cybersecurity, programming languages.
b) Marketing Officer: Basics of marketing, sales management, market research.
c) Treasury Manager: Financial markets, investment management, and treasury operations.
d) Law Officer: Banking regulations, company law, legal aspects of banking.
e) Agriculture Officer: Crop production, soil health, animal husbandry, agronomy.
f) Chartered Accountant: Accounting standards, auditing, financial reporting.
Reasoning Ability (Same as Officer Scale I)
a) Quantitative Aptitude (Same as Officer Scale I)
b) Financial Awareness (Same as Officer Scale II General Banking Officer)
c) English Language/Hindi Language (Same as Officer Scale I)
d) Computer Knowledge (Same as Officer Scale I)
3. IBPS RRB Officer Scale III (Senior Manager)
The Officer Scale III exam is conducted for senior managerial roles and includes a single online exam with six sections:
a) Reasoning Ability (Same as Officer Scale I)
b) Quantitative Aptitude (Same as Officer Scale I)
c) General Awareness (Same as Officer Scale I)
d) English Language / Hindi Language (Same as Officer Scale I)
e) Computer Knowledge (Same as Officer Scale I)
f) Financial Awareness
- Advanced Banking Awareness: In-depth knowledge of banking regulations, risk management, and financial services.
- Financial Management: Concepts of financial planning, budgeting, and financial analysis.
- Corporate Governance: Principles of corporate governance, ethics, and compliance.
- Project Management: Basics of project planning, execution, and monitoring.
4. Interview
The interview is the final stage for all Officer scales. It assesses the candidate’s personality, communication skills, leadership qualities, knowledge of banking, and problem-solving abilities.
Important Points:
- Negative Marking: A penalty of 0.25 marks is deducted for each wrong answer in both Preliminary and Main examinations.
- Sectional Cut-offs: Candidates must clear the sectional cut-offs and the overall cut-offs in both exams to qualify.
- Final Selection: The final selection for Officer Scale I is based on the cumulative marks of the Main Examination and Interview. For Officer Scale II and III, it is based on a single online exam and interview.
